Empowering Indigenous Voices Through the Performing Arts
About Us
Safe Harbors NYC is an Indigenous-led arts initiative dedicated to the development and production of Native theater and performing arts in New York City. Our work centers on amplifying Indigenous voices, combating stereotypes, and building visibility for vibrant Native communities within the broader American theater landscape.
Through theatrical productions, cultural events, panel discussions, and Native cultural consultancy, we foster dialogue between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, audiences, and policymakers. By sharing Indigenous methodologies and cosmologies, we aim to reshape narratives, expand understanding, and create pathways for authentic cross-cultural collaboration.
At Safe Harbors NYC, we believe that Indigenous storytelling is not only art—it’s a vital bridge toward cultural equity, understanding, and connection.
What We Do
-
Programming
Safe Harbors NYC is committed to year-round programming that engages our multi-generational audience with thought-provoking productions and community events.
-
Native Emerging Directors Lab
The Native Directors Lab is an invite-only program that supports emerging Native stage directors nationwide, offering a focused space to explore and develop their craft across diverse theatrical and traditional art forms.
-
Community Discussions & Events
We bring together Indigenous theatre artists and storytellers from across the Northeast to connect, share experiences, and address the challenges faced within Native theatre. Through these gatherings, we build community and lay the foundation for the NYC Collective for the Advancement of Native Theatre.
